Childhood[]

When they were children, Rhian used to called his brother "Fala", because Rhian couldn't pronounce Rafal's name. Rhian used to call him Fala many times and clutched onto Rafal when he needed comfort before Rafal kicked or shoved him away. One time, he used blood magic to turn Rhian's skin see-through, revealing his twin's organs and veins and made Rhian screamed until Rafal turned him back[1].

Rise of The School for Good and Evil[]

This section contains major spoilers. Hit 'Expand' to read further.
In the books Rise of the School for Good and Evil, and Fall of the School for Good and Evil, two twin sorcerer brothers were chosen by the Storian to become the new School Masters of the School for Good and Evil after the previous one had failed his test. The two twins were also given a test, a test of love. If the bond between the two brothers were ever to break, their immortality and powers would be taken away, and the two would no longer rule together as the School Masters. It was Rafal that ruled as the School Master for Evil, and Rhian that ruled as the School Master for Good.

For a period, the twin brothers ruled the single school they had peacefully. They both kept the Storian safely guarded until a new student, Aladdin came. Both brothers thought the boy was Evil, but the Storian decided otherwise, which created many debates between the brothers about what this means. Each brother decided that Aladdin belonged to their school, and this competition lead to the School Masters interfering with Aladdin's initial days at the School for Good and Evil quite often.

At one point, Rafal decided to go out to every corner of the world to seek the answer for the Storian's test. Soon, he found lead about a family of seers that are imprisoned under the sea. To persuade a crew of Night Crawlers to bring him to that place, Rafal came to Blackpool School for Pirates and asked James Hook to accompany him, as the unique blue blood of Hook were the reward he agreed to the Night Crawlers. He also promised that Hook can ask the seers about the way to defeat his nemesis, the Pan. Along the way, he talked to James Hook about his past, and about Good and Evil. He compared James Hook and his sister with Rhian continuously.

When they reached the prison, the ship headed straight underwater, scaring James Hook as he could not breathe underwater. Rafal implied killing Hook after he did not need his blood anymore, but in the end breathed his magic into Hook which allowed him to breathe underwater. Because of Hook's resemblance to Rhian or other factors, Rafal has come to care about Hook and wanted to protect him.

At the prison, Rafal found the family of seers, who gave him the divination that the Storian is sensing a restless soul that is yearning for things more than their brotherly love. And as long as one side is still yearning for more, the Storian reflects the imbalance, making Evil suffer[2] Rafal became impatient, breaking his promise to allow Hook to ask questions. Adela Sader revealed that his love will never be enough, and will eventually lead to betrayal, war, death[3]. James interfere, fighting with Rafal for his chance to ask the seers questions, which created an opportunity for the family of seers to escape. Their fight went on for hours, James' emotions helped him drain the magic out of Rafal and use it to fight himself. They fought each other with Rafal's magic, until magic ran out and the boys began to sank. The Night Crawlers swam down and took James Hook, leaving Rafal to drown, as they only wanted his blue blood. But when they drew blood from the boy, red blood spilled, and it turned out to be Rafal in disguise. He immediately flew back to the School for Good and Evil, deciding that he will be once again loyal to his brother Rhian. However, leaving James Hook behind also makes him sad.

When Rafal returned, he saw that there was a new castle, and the old one was also changed to a crystal building. The Storian was also kept in what seems like the Evil School. He found Rhian in exile, without a shirt, his eyes blacked, his body battered. All the thoughts of love vanished, and Rafal was mad at his brother for trusting Vulcan, a stranger, and making a mess while he was away. But despite that, his love triumphed, and he came up with a plan for them to take over the school again. Rafal acted as a diversion for Rhian to steal the Storian. His plan succeeded, until a Never who became loyal to Vulcan captured him. Eventually, Rhian, along with Aladdin and James Hook (who survived because the youngest member of the family of seers helped him escape from the bottom of the sea) found Rafal by accident and helped free him. They joined forces with the pirates of Blackpool, and stormed the School again to battle Vulcan and the Nevers. As they did, they also received help from the Evers who remained righteous.

During the battle, James Hook protected Rafal and urged him to breathe his magic into the boy again. Surprised by the boy's loyalty, Rafal did, and together they continued fighting. At some point, James Hook asked if Rafal wants to go to Neverland with him, as they can be an invincible duo bonded by Rafal's soul. James Hook also pointed out Rafal has already left Rhian once, which upsetted Rafal. He took back his magic from James Hook and rejected the offer, saying that James was his only friend.

At the climax, Vulcan was able to take the Storian and used it to kill Rhian. Rafal intervened, using his body to shield Rhian. To all of their surprise (except Rafal), the Storian stabbed Rafal in the heart, but his wound immediately closed. Rafal revealed that it was not the Storian that gave them immortality, but it is the love between them. Together with Rhian, they took down Vulcan.

After the victory, Rafal insisted on keeping the two schools apart, also renovating the Doom Room to punish the disloyal Nevers and the Dean of Evil who sided with Vulcan. He also built a lake between the schools and a tower in the middle for the School Masters, in which the Storian was kept. Despite being mad at Rhian, Rafal was still considerate enough to allow the tower to unlock at Rhian's magic touch instead of locking him out. When confronted about these changes, Rafal told Rhian about his disappointment towards the Nevers' disloyalty, and mentioned how much he trusted James Hook. Rafal left soon after that in search of a new student, after directing Rhian to the new School Master's tower. The Storian has already begun a new story about a boy called Fala of Good, a name that Rafal found familiar but could not recall.

At the same time, the two School Masters were beginning their new quests. Rafal was searching for a new Evil student, and Rhian was searching for a new Dean of Good after the resignation of the old one. Rafal went to many different towns, eventually to a teenage club of Black Rabbit to ask for more teens who were evil. The search was unsuccessful, just as Adela Sader, a member from the family of seers, found Rafal and gave him the hint to look for where stories go at night, implying that he search for students from beyond the Woods. Later at night, he returned to the School Master's tower, finally recalling where he knew the name Fala. It was how Rhian used to call him when they were children and Rhian could not pronounce Rafal's name. But Fala still looked nothing like Rafal. While he was pondering upon that, he discovered by accident that the Storian was packing the stories and sent them somewhere. The Storian saw Rafal and attempted to stop him, but Rafal was faster and flew away to follow the books.
RiseSGE Gavaldon

Rafal being at Gavaldon for the first time

He soon reached Gavaldon, where he was surprised by a barrier that kept him from what he thought was his Woods. Marialena Sader was also there, revealing to him that Gavaldon was part of the Woods Beyond, and Rafal could not enter to claim a Reader as student without his brother Rhian, as that would be cheating. However, as Rafal was about to leave, the magic barrier disappeared. Because back at the School, Rhian was also cheating.

Rafal flew back to the School for Good and Evil and saw the Evers practicing their magic. Curiously, he hided behind the trees to observe his brother, but Dean Hook's voice surprised him, and he fell down from the tree. The noise alerted Rhian, so Rafal quickly disguised into Fala to fool Rhian. Fala claimed he was a new Evil student sent by the Evil School Master. Recognising him as the boy from the Storian's tale, Rhian was wary, but lead him to the School of Evil, where Fala displayed his ability and quickly earned the trust of the Nevers. He also learnt about the upcoming Circus of Talents, which was the idea of Dean Hook.

That night, Fala spied on his brother and James Hook, realising that James Hook was lying to Rhian for some reasons. Deciding that if Good wins the upcoming Circus of Talents, there will be no stopping to Rhian's cheating. So he also trained his Never students to unlock magic using their own emotions. Fala focused on his students one by one, helping them discover their deepest feelings and their magic. Moved by Fala's dedication towards them, the Nevers soon took Fala as their new School Master and were loyal to him. Even when Fala chose the best people for the competition instead of the Dean of Evil, nobody opposed.

When they arrived at the Circus of Talents the next day, Fala saw Rhian and James Hook sharing clothes, which bothered him. Later during his act, Fala displayed his shape-shifting abilities, turning into Rafal. His magic ability was so powerful that Rhian thought it was actually his brother, but Fala turned back to himself. As Rhian ran away, Fala followed, maintaining his disguise. He saw James Hook convincing Rhian to breathe his magic to Hook like Rafal did, realising this was the scene the Storian has painted. He was betrayed by his brother, and so their immortality was stripped by the Storian. He flew back to the School Master's tower, realising that the Storian has never actually indicated which one of them were the Good and Evil twin.

The next morning, James Hook left, taking with him the best Nevers and Evers from the School. Appearing indifferent, Rafal sat on the shore drawing what he thought could be the crest for their school - a pair of black and white swans. Rafal told Rhian they needed to find more students, suggesting them to go to a place called Gavaldon.

Due to the immense amount of distrust the brothers had for each other, the Storian had stripped the brothers of their immortality and powers, which introduced Peter Pan into the competition to become the new School Master. Eventually, there were two sides made after the revelation that Rhian was the 'One' in the prophecy; one side advocating for Rafal, and the other for Rhian.

Later, it was also revealed that Rafal was the Good twin instead, as his breath cured Rufius from Midas's golden touch, as only Good can cure an Evil curse.

The division between the supporters of the two brothers lead to a Great War at the School for Good and Evil. When Rhian confronts Rafal, the third party killed a student on Rafal's side. Rafal ordered his side to defend. The Great War began.

After the battle stopped, the brothers had both made it to the place where the Storian was kept, and there a painting of the 'One' was being drawn in real-time. Rafal, mistaking it for himself, began to comfort Rhian, but he wouldn't go down knowing he was not the next School Master. Even when Rafal thought that he would be School Master, he was still kind to Rhian, by offering Rhian a place at the school, but instead of accepting Rafal's offer, Rhian got mad and cruelly stabbed Rafal with the Storian.

Hundreds of years after the Great War, Callis of Netherwood came to the School for Evil to teach Uglification. For the past 500 years, Good had been winning all fairy tales, making people believe that the School Master is actually Good and has been manipulating the Storian. In reality, Rafal was Evil and his hunger for power disturbed the balance. To keep balance, the Storian let Good win all the stories.

Rafal believed that is he found his one true love, Evil would win. So, he set his eyes on Callis who, despite being Evil, wanted to find true love. When she came to the school, the Storian began to write her story, which was shocking. Many times, Callis could be seen in the School Master's tower. This made Merlin suspicious. When Merlin was convinced the School Master was Evil and using Callis as part of his plot to fight Good’s love with Evil’s, he created a League of Twelve, prepared to foil the School Master’s attack once it came. Only that attack never came. Instead, Callis simply vanished one night from the School for Evil without a trace and the Storian abandoned her fairy tale, as if it had lost track of her entirely.

August Sader foresaw that the School Master's true love would be a Reader. This led Rafal to start kidnapping Readers from Gavaldon every four years. August convinced the School Master to let his sister, Evelyn Sader, teach at the school. Evelyn was convinced that she was Rafal's true love and, at some point, had two secret kids with him: Rhian and Rafal Japeth. When Evelyn spied on the students with her butterflies and started creating chaos, the School Master fired her.

Even before Sophie came to the School for Good and Evil, Rafal was constantly waiting for someone like her. On kidnapping night, he was there leading Agatha to Sophie. He ensured Sophie didn't fail in her first days at school, allowing her to join the Circus of Talents, giving her a riddle in which the answer would lead her to himself, and interfering with her fairy tale because he knew how it must end.

At the end, he revealed his true appearance to her, that this was all a test to find his true love. He explained about the incident of murdering his brother, and finding a love of Evil. He suggested that if they marry for the purpose of hurting, destroying, punishing, then Evil have something to fight for - their Never After. Moved by his explanations, Sophie gave herself to Rafal to have her fairy-tale kiss and her happy ending.

Their kiss did not reveal any love that the storybooks promised Sophie, and all she found was hate. She broke away, realising what she has done. Just as Rafal moved to claim her, Agatha came, and the girls fell out of the Tower. Rafal followed them, unnoticed by the students around. He threatens Agatha for interfering with love, but Agatha did not allow him to take Sophie, enraging the School Master. He used the Storian like a dagger and hurled it at Agatha, but Sophie took the blow, shocking Rafal in the process. At that moment, the students realised the true enemy, and the silver swan crests on both Good and Evil uniformed turned blinding white and came alive, into the ghost of the Good Brother who looked exactly like him. Rafal scowled that his brother is just a spirit without body, just as Sader arrived. The Good brother took Sader's body, turning into a giant swan. Rafal turned into a shadow and fled towards the lake, but the Good brother snatched the shadow and tore it apart.

Rafal was brought back to life by the scheme of Evelyn Sader. At the end of A World Without Princes, Rafal tricked Sophie into kissing him, making him young again and banishing Tedros and Agatha back to Gavaldon.

The Last Ever After[]

Throughout the book, Rafal tries to propose to Sophie, and make her truly Evil. Meanwhile, he also re-established the School into the School for Old and New Evil, inviting the old villains back and plotted with them to rewrite the fairy tales. In The Last Ever After, Rafal divided the school into School for New Evil and School For Old Evil and imprisoned the Good teachers in blocks of ice. He kept Sophie in his tower, next to the Storian. He would come every evening and propose to Sophie, who would refuse. Ever day he would come dressed as the princes Sophie used to chase, trying to impress her. When he promised Sophie that they would be as happy as Agatha and Tedros, she accepted his ring and became Queen of Evil. She then began to teach Curses and Death Traps at the School For New Evil and rule the school along side Rafal. By accepting his love, they were both immortal and powerful.

The only way to defeat Rafal would be to convince Sophie to willingly break the ring he gave her using Excalibur, which Agatha and Tedros both tried to no avail. By doing so, Rafal would be mortal again, and could be killed. When Sophie came back to Rafal after briefly running away with Agatha and Tedros, they trained the old fairy tale villains whom Rafal had brought back to life in zombie form alongside the students of New Evil.

Rafal's plan was to change fairy tale history by helping the zombie villains kill their respective heroes and change their fairy tale endings. Every death would break down the shield around Gavaldon. They could then attack the village and let Evil rule the Woods.

When Sophie and Rafal finally attacked the League of Thirteen in the Stymph Forest with their Evil army, the students of New Evil sided with the League and rebelled. But the Gavaldon's shield still broke and they wreaked havoc in the village. Rafal captured Stefan and gave him to Sophie to execute. At the end, Sophie decided to spare her father and chose Agatha over Rafal. She then broke the ring with Excalibur. Sophie and Agatha then defeated Rafal together.

The Camelot Years[]

It was later revealed that Rhian and Japeth were, in fact, Rafal's son and not Arthur's. His relationship with Evelyn Sader was revealed.

Appearance[]

In the prequel book Rise of the School for Good and Evil, he is portrayed as calm and cunning. The book also says that he is very handsome. He is also described to have "sky-colored eyes and alabaster skin and frost-white hair as sharp as spikes". However, the cover art shows him to have green eyes.. That is confirmed in Fall of the School for Good and Evil, after it is said that the blue eyes were Rhian Blue, suggesting that Rafal had green eyes instead.

When disguised as Fala, Rafal was tall and lanky with a long, crooked nose, coal-black eyes, and an oafish bowl of brown hair. He had a crisp, clipped accent.

During the School for Good and Evil, Rafal was portrayed as an evil ruthless villain. He is capable of showing Sophie love, but also manipulative towards her at times. To other characters, he is cruel and does not care about their outcomes.

When Sophie destroyed his ring, his appearance changed grotesquely, his skin became wrinkled and stained, his white hair fell out, leaving him bald, his muscular body deflated and shrank, his clothes burned, leaving him naked until he finally became a naked mummy with red eyes.

Personality[]

Rise Duology[]

This section contains spoiler. Hit 'Expand' to read further.
Rafal's personality changes throughout Rise and Fall very much. In Rise he is portrayed as evil, cunning, and nudging around the balance. However, he makes sure that the balance is always intact. At several times, Rafal left the School to venture to different places in search for answers to restore the balance between Good and Evil. He also shows immense love for his twin brother Rhian, shown in certain events such as having to "do the dirty works" for Rhian because Rhian is Good and he is Evil.

That piece of Rafal’s soul had turned him cold and unyielding. Like a reflection of the School Master himself. But if this is how Rafal felt . . . so free from warmth and compassion . . . so empty of anything but villainous purpose . . . what was stopping him from destroying everything in his path? From killing his Good brother and taking over the Woods? - James Hook's feeling when immersed with Rafal's soul[4]

Rafal's soul is described as cold and unyielding. But at one point, Hook also noticed he can feel a part of Rafal's soul that is warm and protective, the part of love that prevented from killing his Good Brother and taking over the Storian. During the Rise of The School for Good and Evil, Rafal is also shown to care very little about the Nevers, despite him being the Evil School Master. He recalls that Rhian was often better than him at remembering Nevers' names. He taught the Nevers little and punished them severely for siding with Vulcan. It was not until disguising as Fala and really hearing the Nevers' thoughts about him that made Rafal change his mind and properly trained the Nevers for the Circus of Talent. He also allowed himself to see how the Nevers growth, despite them being disloyal, and admire their talents. Within a day, Fala was regarded as the School Master by the Nevers.

When Rafal is disguised as Fala, he introduced his father as Grand Vizier Impala, Master of Dark Arts. He also rejected Dean Humburg calling him an Ugly duckling and summoned a phantom swan to threw the Dean up to the ceiling.

In Fall, Rafal cares a lot about Rhian. Despite being betrayed several times and extremely mad at Rhian for constantly going behind their love and find other men, Rafal still did what he could to help Rhian. After a series of events, Rafal shows his true nature of Good. Even during the Great War, Rafal didn't want for one of them to die. He is cold but it is of good intentions for he wants to protect his students. He may act evil sometimes, but he has a good heart. Though he has also shown to be arrogant.

At the end of Fall, even when knowing the true nature of Rhian and everything they have been through, Rafal tries to convince Rhian that they were neither Good nor Evil, but simply humans. He tried to persuade Rhian to remain with them and become loving brothers like before.

School for Good and Evil[]

Abilities[]

Magic: Rafal is known for being one of the most powerful sorcerers in the world, only his brother Rhian could rival him.

  • Disguise: During the Circus of Talent, Rafal, disguised as Fala, displayed shape-shifting abilities that even fooled Rhian.
  • When he went to the Monrovia Prison under the sea with James Hook, he was seen being able to share a part of his soul with Hook, allowing the pirate to breathe underwater and control some magic.

Blood Magic: As the Evil School Master, Rafal masters Blood magic abilities. This includes:

  • Flying: Throughout the sequels, Rafal is seen flying around with ease, often carries other people like Rhian and Midas as well. Meanwhile, Rhian cannot, as "Evers are forbidden to do it." (Rise, p. 254)

Swordsmanship: Rafal is extremely skilled with a sword, he is even able to combine his physical abilities with his magical ones to become stronger.

Relationships[]

Family[]

Rhian Sader-Mistral and Japeth are the twin sons of Rafal. He was present for their birth, as well as naming them and unlocking Rhian's finger glow. It is unknown about his love or feelings towards them.

It is unknown about the exact relationship between Rafal and the Mistral Sisters. However, he calls them 'sisters', and they were there with him when Evelyn Sader was in labour.

Warning: This section contains major spoilers for the Rise Duology

Rhian Mistral is Rafal's twin brother who served as the School Master of Good for 100 years. Rhian had also protected the Storian along with Rafal, their love for each other keeping the balance between Good and Evil. This was until Rhian killed Rafal when the Storian was drawing the new School Master. The act was so Evil, the Storian gave the punishment for Good to win every fairy tale for the next 200 years.

Later in the Rise of the School for Good and Evil, Rafal, disguising as Fala, saw Rhian giving James Hook his magic the same way Rafal did to the pirate earlier. The scene was prophecised by the Storian in the fairy tale "Fala and his brother", where Fala was looking from behind a tree, seeing two figures kissing. This betrayal made Rafal heartbroken and lashing out at the Storian. In the Fall of the School for Good and Evil, Rafal appeared suspecting and angry towards his brother. However, until the end of the book, Rafal always tries to convince his brother that they can return to be loving brothers like they used to be.

“You had Vulcan. You had Hook. Your faithful soldiers who turned against you. Clearly I’m not enough for you anymore. So isn’t it time I found my own faithful soldier?” - Rafal, in Fall of the School for Good and Evil

Rafal is shown abandoning his wants several times throughout the book in favor of loving his brother as he was told by a seer betrayal, war, and death would come if their bond was broken.

Rise Duology[]

Love Interests[]

James Hook

Love turned to poison[5].

Rafal appeared to have some romantic interest towards James Hook during their first travel to the Monrovia Prison. It was revealed that Rafal was upset when he had to leave Hook to drown, as he was the boy Rafal tried to love. Later, Hook returned and assisted Rafal in the battle against Vulcan (after throwing a boot at Rafal's head), and the loyalty of the pirate surprised Rafal. Hook even proposed for Rafal to come to Neverland with him, an offer which Rafal turned down due to his loyalty to his brother.
Hook saving Rafal in Monrovia

Hook, with Rafal's soul inside him, used magic to save Rafal.

Come with me to Neverland,

After defeating Vulcan, Rafal still regarded the pirate as a "loyal soul"[6]. However. after the rejection, James Hook turned to Rhian and became the Dean of Good. After returning and see James Hook and Rhian together, Rafal appeared greatly disturbed, even disguising as Fala, a Never student, to observe the two. At the Circus of Talents, Rafal noticed how James was sharing clothes with his brother. That little detail bothered Rafal greatly, although it could be due to either his care for Hook or love for his brother, to the point that he imagined both James and Rhian dead.

In Fall of the School for Good and Evil, Rafal and James Hook worked together in many instances. During Peter Pan's challenge in the Blue Forest, Rafal (disguising as Fala) recognised Hook despite his disguise. Later in the School Master's tower, Hook also finally realised that Fala was actually Rafal in disguise. During the Great War, Hook and other students were on Rafal's side.

Midas
Midas was a Reader that Rafal kidnapped to the School for Good and Evil. Using Midas' wish to go home, Rafal managed to make a deal with the boy. However, with Peter Pan's unexpected arrival, Rafal and Rhian were captured. Midas helped rescue Rafal, and from then they began working with each other more often.

It is unclear whether Midas and Rafal's relationship was romantic or platonic, but Midas showed Rafal by being cured of his golden touch that he was good. Rafal also saved Midas once.

Others[]

Dean Humburg

Even though Humburg is the Dean for Evil, Rafal does not have much trust towards him especially since Vulcan took over. Although Rafal has not been away for long, he immediately sided with Vulcan, helping him keep Rafal imprisoned. Humburg's reason for that was simply wanting a stable job. After that, Rafal has little trust towards Humburg's "dubious" loyalty.

Marialena Sader

Marialena was a student from the School for Evil. They did not talk too much until the time Rafal turned her into Maleficent the Evil Fairy and they met again in Gavaldon. Although Marialena remained neurtal and did not take part in choosing sides for the new The School Master (Rafal), she gave Rafal many hints towards what she can see with her vision.

Vulcan

Rafal interviewed Vulcan of Netherwood as a potential candidate for his Dean of Evil. However, seeing how his brother Rhian was immediately drawn towards Vulcan, Rafal rejected him and hired Humburg instead. Later when Vulcan tries to take of the Storian and control of the School for Good and Evil, Rafal and Rhian joined forces with James Hook, the Pirate Captain, their pirates, and the Evers to storm the school. Rafal took Vulcan down with the Storian.

Peter Pan (Rise Duology)
When Peter Pan (Rise Duology) came to the School for Good and Evil and revealed the School Masters being stripped of their immortality, he slashed Rafal and Rhian across their legs.

Later, when disguised as Fala, he became Peter's guard, Peter addressed him directly, which startled him, thinking he might have been found out.

Rufius

Rafal did not hesitate before using Midas's curse to turn Rufius into gold and offered the boy to gain allies in the Great War. Later, however, he discovered that his kiss can reverse the curse, as only a truly Good soul can cure Midas' gold curse. Being revived, Rufius was shocked about being kissed by a School Master. But apart from that, he was fine.

The School for Good and Evil[]

Love Interests[]

Sophie Rafal believes Sophie is is true love for Never After. He spent the first school year doing things to ensure Sophie does not fail her classes and gave her a riddle whose answer would lead her towards him.

In The Last Ever After, Rafal constantly proposed to Sophie everyday and try to win her over. At one point, Sophie accepted the proposal, but the Storian is still not writing the word 'The End', suggesting that something is incomplete.

Evelyn Sader

Evelyn Sader was Rafal's girlfriend. They had twin children together, Rhian and Japeth.

Trivia[]

This section contains spoiler from the Rise Duology. Hit 'Expand' to read further.
  • Rafal, the actual Good Brother, died in the Great War, murdered by his Evil Brother Rhian. Later, Rhian changed his appearance according to the Storian and decided to call himself "Rafal". This was also evident why when Sophie asked "Rafal" the name of his brother, he did not reply[8]
  • Rafal has been limping throughout most of Fall, a result from his leg injury he got when at Gavaldon. His injury was due to Rhian betraying their love, thus losing them their immortality. In his alter ego, Fala, his limping allowed James Hook to realised that Fala was actually the Evil School Master in disguise.
  • The alignment between Good and Evil of Rafal and Rhian has been foreshadowed:
    • Their sleeping habit: Evers were famously good and sleeping and Nevers woeful insomniacs. But Rhian was a terrible sleeper, and Rafal could sleep through a typhoon[9].
    • Rhian could remember Never students names better than Rafal[10], and Rafal has the implicit instinct that he was better than the students he was supposed to represent.
    • "Good do the rescuing" is a common thing in fairy tales, and it has always been Rhian who got caught up in some mess and Rafal has to come to the rescue.
  • Rafal's favourite food was cucumber and herb butter sandwiches.
  • The Storian never writes about the School Masters, but both Rafal and Rhian (and the Pans) has had several stories written about themselves.
